In and Out, 2005.
In and Out is the first of several tables in my series called Beyond the Top. This series is an axploration into the concept of carrying the content of the scupture beyond the usual terminus at the top's plane. More simply, I wished to carry the sculptural base of the table above and beyond (in this case through) the plane of the table top to include it more harmoniously with the work's statement. We all know that an object is made more apparent when we point to it. It seems to me that that is often what is occurring when a table's legs terminate at the top: they are pointing to the top, and by bringing attention to it they are giving the top even greater finality. It is my intent to have the top be neither the focus nor invisible, but instead to be a part of the design of the work. The supporting members on In and Out do not terminate at the top but extend through it, curving, one resting on its surface, the other passing through it again actually to end below what it is supporting. In this way, the top is encompassed by and included with the sculpure and is joined more fully with it. The stone used on In and Out is a natural granite. Its brightness is a rare form of a stone called Red Marinace.
It is 65 inches long, 19 1/2 inches wide and is suspended 27 3/4 inches above the floor.
